Respiratory Therapists (RTS) are also known as Respiratory Care Practitioners. They evaluate, treat and provide care to patients with respiratory problems or other cardiopulmonary disorders. What does a Respiratory Therapist do?

The American Association of Respiratory Care describes a day in the life of a Respiratory Therapist including activities such as:

• The diagnosis of lung and respiratory disorders.
• Recommended treatments for respiratory diseases.
• The execution of the breast study of patients.
• Analyzing breath, tissue and blood samples from patients.
• The management of fans and artificial airway devices for patients.

Respiratory therapists provide care to patients, ranging from premature babies with underdeveloped lungs to elderly people suffering from lung diseases. They also respond to emergencies, such as heart attack, stroke, or shock.

How can you become a Respiratory Therapist?

The minimum qualification to become a Respiratory Therapist is an associate degree respiratory therapy. Although an associate degree in respiratory therapy is enough to perform in the profession, Respiratory Therapists have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in respiratory therapy earn career.

In addition to the degree, all US states except Alaska and Hawaii require Respiratory Therapists to have a valid license from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NRBC). The Board of Directors grants the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential to students graduating from entry-level or advanced respiratory therapy program and pass a licensure exam.

CRTs which complete advanced respiratory therapy program and pass two separate exams qualify for a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification of CBRN. However, students must take care before enrolling in a respiratory therapy program that is accredited by a recognized accrediting body, such as the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).

What will you learn?

As part of their training, students from a respiratory therapy degree teach subjects such as heart and kidney anatomy & physiology, pharmacology heart, lung anatomy & physiology, pulmonary function tests, respiratory care protocols, polysomnography, and much more.

In addition to these clinical concepts, respiratory therapy graduates also learn management principles that require respiratory health care providers to perform supervisory functions. These themes include the management of planning, the psychology of motivation, business, organizational design, and change, etc.
